Memphis, Tennessee, is the most dangerous city to drive in after dark, according to a September 2026 report on nighttime traffic in America. Driving at night in the US is nine times riskier than during the day, and this newly released study by Hines Law reveals the top 10 cities where late-hour crashes kill the most people.
- Memphis, Tennessee, is the deadliest place for night driving, with a fatal crash rate nearly 4 times higher than the typical big city.
- Half of the people killed on Little Rock, Arkansas, roads after dark were on foot, with 75 pedestrian deaths in five years.
- Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sees 70% of fatal crashes happen at night, one of the highest rates in the country.
The research examined 280 US cities to find where driving after dark is the most dangerous. It counted the people killed in crashes that happened in the dark, including pedestrians, and compared those numbers to each city’s population. The report also looked at how many of a city’s fatal crashes happen at night, using only crashes police recorded as occurring in the dark, not at dawn or dusk. The data covers a five-year period. These figures were combined into a single score, revealing which cities are the deadliest for night driving.
Here’s a look at the top 10 cities where driving after dark is the most dangerous:
| City | Fatal Crashes in Darkness, 2020-2024 | Fatal Crashes in Darkness on Roads Without Street Lighting, 2020-2024 | Pedestrians Killed in Darkness, 2020-2024 | Share of Fatal Crashes That Happened in Darkness (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memphis | 625 | 65 | 246 | 61.6 |
| Jackson | 134 | 22 | 53 | 66.3 |
| Baton Rouge | 173 | 21 | 79 | 70.3 |
| Fort Lauderdale | 135 | 17 | 68 | 68.9 |

Memphis, Tennessee
- Traffic deaths in the dark: 22.4 per 100K residents each year
- Total people killed in night crashes: 694
- Pedestrians killed in the dark: 246
- Share of fatal crashes that happen in the dark: 61.6%
Memphis is the most dangerous big city in the country to drive in after dark. Over the past five years, 694 people died in crashes there at night, which works out to more than 22 deaths for every 100K residents. The typical city sees fewer than 6, so the nighttime fatal crash rate in Memphis is actually four times higher. People on foot make up a large part of the toll, with 246 pedestrians killed at night. Overall, about 6 in 10 fatal crashes in Memphis happen after dark, which is way higher than what other cities see.
Jackson, Mississippi
Jackson comes second as another dangerous place to drive after dark. Roughly two-thirds of the city’s deadly road incidents occur after dark, and the nighttime fatal crash rate is around three times the level of a typical city. On top of that, of the 150 people killed in night crashes over five years, 53 were on foot, more than 1 in 3. That works out to over 7 pedestrian deaths for every 100K residents each year, which is about 3.5 times the rate other cities see.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Baton Rouge sees more of its deadly crashes after dark than most other cities. Around 7 in 10 fatal crashes there occur at night, compared with roughly 48% in the typical city. In total, 188 people were killed in those night crashes over the past five years, putting the death rate at nearly 17 per 100K residents each year, about 3 times the typical city’s. Driving culture could be part of the reason, as about 18% of these road accidents involved speeding.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
In Fort Lauderdale, the people most at risk after dark are the ones on foot. Of the 141 people killed in night crashes, 68 were pedestrians, which is close to half. For a city of about 185K residents, that means more than 7 pedestrian deaths for every 100K people each year, roughly 3.5 times the average city’s rate. Nearly 7 in 10 of the city’s fatal crashes happen in the dark, so a walk home at night carries more risk here than in most large cities.
Little Rock, Arkansas
Little Rock rounds out the top five, facing the problem of missing streetlights. Almost half of its fatal night crashes, 70 out of 143, happened on roads with no lighting at all, more than double the share in the typical city. Pedestrians pay the highest price, with 75 killed in the dark, which is half of all night road deaths in the city. The overall night deaths here stand at nearly 15 per 100K residents each year, more than 2.5 times the rate seen in other cities.
A legal expert from Hines Law commented on the study:
“Night crashes usually come down to what drivers do, not just the lack of light. Tired drivers make more mistakes late in the evening, as the body naturally wants to sleep at that time. Drinking adds to the problem, since bars close and impaired drivers head home when the roads are darkest. Speed matters too. An empty-looking road makes people feel safe, so they tend to drive faster than they should. Slowing down a little, keeping the windshield clean, and scanning the edges of the road for people are simple habits that lower the risk.”
