In the coming weeks, Georgia drivers can expect law enforcement to be out in numbers looking over their shoulders. Ahead of the summer driving season, The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is going to be setting up the enforcement of the seat belt law. They are hoping to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on the road. The Click It or Ticket initiative began in full force on Monday and it will continue through June 4th.
According to the director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Harris Blackwood, seat belts are required by Georgia because they save lives. He stated that more than half of the people killed in automobile accidents in Georgia were not wearing seat belts. He added that if these people were all wearing seat belts, many would have survived.
According to a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 50 percent of the people who were killed in Georgia crashes were either not wearing a seatbelt or it could not be determined whether or not they were buckled up.
Atlanta Car Accidents on the Rise Resulting in Personal Injuries
To make the summer driving season, on May 22nd at 4 pm, law enforcement officers will head out on the road across the state of Georgia to look for violators. The reason to start now is based on a report from Roger Hayes. Hayes is the law enforcement director for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety which stated that the most traffic fatalities occur during the summer.
Hayes stated that getting drivers to wear their seat belts can reduce the rising of deaths that have occurred on the roads over the last two years.
While the focus on seat belt violations will end on June 4th, officers will continue to enforce the law all year to reduce the number of fatalities in car accidents.
